GOLFER'S CORNER #4 Golfer’s Corner: Rules changes you need to know.
FOURTH: Estimating your “Reference Point” and Dropping Procedure. (a) The Reference Point. This is where your ball lies, or where your ball crossed over the “edge” of a Penalty Area. (b) The Drop. Most of us have, by now, heard that you now drop from the knee. Heaven knows why, but that is the Rule. It must fall straight down and must not bump off any part of the player’s body. (c) The Relief Area. The area where you can drop changes a little depending on the circumstance. In most cases the Relief Area will be one club to each side of your reference point (either the position of the ball or based on the center of the straight line you are using). (d) Must stay in. Now, your drop must stay in the Relief Area (no more roll out). If the ball just won’t stay in the area, after two tries, you place the ball and play on. (e) Relief Area from a Penalty Area. The Relief Area here is two clubs from the edge your ball crossed over, or sits on. Remember that in all cases; the ball must stay within the Relief Area, the Area can’t be any nearer to the hole, and you must drop on the correct part of the course for relief. Important Note: It is a fundamental tenet of Golf to have the integrity to fairly estimate the place where your golf ball crosses the edge of any Penalty Area to have the best possible Reference Point. This is done by seeking the input of witnesses and or your fellow competitors. Remember, fairness and integrity are fundamental components of the game, allowing for the use of judgment in such cases. If you can’t trust your playing companions to do the ‘fair thing,’ perhaps you should find others who you can be comfortable with. (And if you feel you can’t trust anyone, anytime, to do the fair thing, well, perhaps you should see a therapist.)
