GOLFER'S CORNER    This year players will notice some course marking changes at Wyantenuck.  First, yellow hazard markers will be changed to red, allowing the use of the "lateral" hazard rule for all water hazards (which will be referred to as "penalty areas").  This is part of the USGA rules changes that will take affect next year.  Wyantenuck has chosen to adopt the hazard rule this year, as allowed by USGA.  This gives you the option to take a one stroke penalty and drop the ball within two club lengths of where the ball crossed the hazard, without regard to whether the hazard is "lateral" or not.  You will still have  the option to (1) play your shot out of the hazard without penalty or, with a one stroke penalty, (2) play again from the spot where the original ball was last played or (3) drop the ball as far back as you like, keeping the spot where your ball crossed into the hazard between you and the pin.  The option to drop the ball on the far side of a lateral hazard is no longer available. Also, look for changes in areas covered by white out of bounds stakes.  They will be eliminated on holes #9 and #11.  Why?  USGA standards dictate that white stakes should be used on property boundaries, not internally.  If you hit a ball on these holes and you're concerned about finding it, play a provisional ball to keep up the pace of play.  Look for more news on upcoming rules changes in future Golfers corners.
