Saturday, August 4 ~  Call the Golf Shop with questions.  Sign-up on the front porch.

The handicap system is designed to provide a consistent, equitable measurement so that players at different skill levels can compete.  It's pretty simple, but the system works only if every golfer posts every eligible score.  What's an eligible score?  One where at least 7 holes are played at a course that has a USGA rating during the handicap season.  Scores should not be posted if the player is playing alone or is not playing according to the rules of golf (e.g. carrying more than 14 clubs; using non-conforming clubs, balls or devices; playing two balls).  Also, the handicap rules state that a score should only be posted if a player is trying his/her best.  Post a nine-hole score if you play 7 to 12 holes.  Post an eighteen-hole score if you play 13 or more holes.  If you play 7 or 8 holes, count par-plus-handicap for the missing holes to round off the nine.  Do the same to round off 18 if you play 13 or more. "Par-plus-handicap" means count par plus the number of strokes you would get for the hole based on your course handicap.  For example, if you play in a golf league that starts on the 11th hole, you must post a nine hole score for the back nine.  The tenth (18th handicap) hole  score would be 4 plus the number of handicap strokes you get in a match (1 if your handicap is 18 to 35; 2 if your handicap is 36 or more).
