GOLFER'S CORNER

#1 Golfer’s Corner: Rules Changes You Need to Know

Why change? Succinctly put, to simplify the Rules and speed play.

What has changed? Several Rules and some course markings. The Golfer’s Corner will go through the most frequent ones and especially the new course markings you will see at Wyantenuck, some of which we jump started last year. We will take them in four groups: the green, playing from tee to green, penalty areas and bunkers, and course markings.

First: The Green. (a) If the ball moves? Bottom Line: Once you mark the ball on the green (you own that spot), no matter what causes it to move, you replace the ball and play on without penalty. So, if natural forces cause the ball to move once you have marked then replaced it, you replace it and play on, no penalty. In all cases, if you cause the ball to move by accident, you simply replace and play on, no penalty. “Watch out:” If you haven’t marked the ball yet and gravity (a touchy lie on a slope of the green for instance) or the wind causes the ball to move, you must play it from where it (rolls to) ‘comes to rest.’ (b) The flagstick? Bottom Line: Leave it in or take it out, your choice, but, you have to declare it prior to your putt. (c) Fixing stuff? Bottom Line: Once you are on the putting surface you can fix any damage (ball marks, spike marks, holes left from acorns that got partly embedded, animal tracks, etc.) that is in your line of putt. Just don’t overdo it and don’t try to make a trough for the ball; that would be a No-No. (d) Wrong putting green? Bottom Line: If your ball is on the wrong putting green you must not play from it. You take free relief at the nearest point available and play on. There are plenty more details regarding the Rules changes.
To study them, see Rule #13 Putting Greens.
