Handicap Corner

What if I’m playing a match from the white tees against someone playing the golds?

If a match is played on different tees, the difference in the golfers' course handicaps has to be further adjusted by the difference in the course rating for the tees.  For example, if I have a 12 handicap on the white tees and play another player with a 17 handicap on the white tees, I would give up five strokes if we both played from the whites.  But if he moves up to the gold tees, where he has a 16 handicap, we would play even – the four stroke difference in our handicaps would be reduced by the four stroke difference in the course rating for men on the gold and white tees.

Why is this so?  Everyone has a single Handicap Index that is calculated based on the Slope and Course Rating establishedfor golf courses and tee boxes by the USGA.  A Course Handicap can then be calculated for any tee box on any USGA rated golf course, but it's only based on the Slope, not the Course Rating.  If players play from different tee boxes (or even compare net scores from different golf courses) they must further adjust the Course Handicap by the Course Rating.

In a stroke play event where players compete from different tees, the event committee may decide to either add the course handicap difference to the players on the back tees (this is the method preferred in the Rules of Golf) or subtract it from the players on the forward tee.  The Course Rating at Wyantenuck differs by four strokes between the white & gold tees for men.
